What is the correct size for my table?

Choosing the right tablecloth is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also of practicality. The size of the tablecloth must fit the table, offering a harmonious drape that contributes to the elegance of your dining room. In this guide, we will explore tablecloth sizes for rectangular, square, and round tables, and see how to choose vis-à-vis runners for a touch of style.

To choose the right tablecloth, all you need is a few simple pieces of information and an eye for detail. Buying the right size tablecloth will make all the difference to the new decor of your dining room. Please keep in mind that every tablecloth will shrink slightly during the first few washes, so it's a good idea to consider buying a size 4-5% larger than the theoretical size.

Rectangular or square tables

For rectangular tables, the tablecloth should completely cover the table surface. Ideally, about 25-30 cm of overhang on each side will give the table a very elegant look. But for practicality, the overhang can also be shorter, as long as the overhangs are similar in length and width.

Here's how to calculate the tablecloth dimensions:

  • Measure the table: take the length and width of the table.
  • Add the overhang: approximately 40-60 cm to the length and width of the table to include the overhang on both sides.

Example:

  • Rectangular table 100x200 cm
  • Rectangular tablecloth 170x270 cm (example of 35 cm overhang per side)

Round tables

For rectangular tables, the tablecloth should completely cover the table surface. Ideally, about 25-30 cm of overhang on each side will give the table a very elegant look. But for practicality, the overhang can also be shorter, as long as the overhangs are similar in length and width.

Here's how to calculate the tablecloth dimensions:

  • Measure the table: take the diameter of the table.
  • Add the overhang: approximately 50-60 cm to the length and width of the table to include the overhang on both sides.

Example:

  • Round table diameter 110 cm
  • Round tablecloth 170 cm (example of 30 cm overhang per side)

Table runner or Vis à vis

Table runners, also known as vis-à-vis, offer an elegant option to enrich your table with style, leaving the table partially uncovered. Arranged lengthwise or crosswise along the table, they create a refined and harmonious effect. To choose the right runners, consider whether you intend to use them as a place setting that replaces a tablecloth. In this case, you can use them across the short side of the table, letting them hang over the ends, so:

  • Runner length: it will be sufficient if it is 50-70 cm longer than the width of the table.
  • Runner width: our runners are 45 cm, an adequate size to accommodate a place setting for one person.

Example:

  • Table 90x140 cm.
  • No. 2 runners 45x170 cm placed in parallel with a 40 cm overhang.

If, on the other hand, you intend to use the runner as a scenic centerpiece or as a decoration on a large piece of furniture in the living or dining room, consider that the tabletop or furniture surface must be at least 30 cm longer than the runner's length to achieve a beautiful effect.
